History

The Kōnan Railway was founded on March 27, 1926, and began operations between Hirosaki and Tsugaru-Onoe Station on September 7, 1927. By July 1, 1948, the entire line was electrified to 600 Volts. The line was extended to Kuroishi Station by July 1, 1950. Voltage on the line was raised to 750 volts by April 1, 1954 and to 1500 volts by September 1, 1961. Express services were initiated in November 1975. All freight operations were suspended from July 1984. An accident occurred on the line at Inakadate Station, when two trains collided, resulting in 32 injuries, but no fatalities. A new Automatic Block Signal system became operational from November 1, 1999. A train derailed at Hiraka Station on June 12, 2007, but no injuries were reported; however, express services were suspended from August 2007.
